MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Grizzlies center Isaiah Stewart sustained a moderate left ankle sprain in the first quarter of the Grizzlies preseason road game against the Atlanta Hawks on October 5 and will be reevaluated in two weeks.
The club medical update said Stewart is diagnosed with a moderate left ankle sprain and will be reevaluated in 2 weeks while recuperating from a sprained ankle after the Atlanta exhibition.
A second account said Stewart injured his ankle on a fall while defending a shot at the rim during the preseason opener against the Atlanta Hawks on Oct. 5. He left the game in the first quarter and did not return after playing two minutes.
The timeline means Stewart is not expected to be available for the Oct. 21 season-opening matchup against the Utah Jazz. A Field Level Media report also noted he could be available for the second game on Oct. 23 against the host Golden State Warriors if the reevaluation clears him.
Memphis acquired Stewart and the remainder of his four-year contract during an offseason trade with the Detroit Pistons. Zach Edey and Quinten Post are expected to receive the bulk of minutes at center while Stewart recovers from the moderate left ankle sprain.
City Hall at 125 N Main St, Memphis, TN 38103 sits near FedExForum downtown where the Grizzlies open against Utah. Mayor Paul Young office tracks big arena nights that affect traffic and visitor planning around the Beale Street corridor.
Fans should treat the two-week reevaluation as the next firm checkpoint rather than a guaranteed return date. The Grizzlies have not announced additional imaging details beyond the Oct. 9 and Oct. 10 medical updates covering the October 5 injury.
Until Stewart returns, Memphis will lean on Edey, Post and versatile forwards in center minutes as the club finishes preseason and prepares for the Jazz opener at FedExForum.
