MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Light, Gas and Water said Tuesday that the left lanes of both directions of Union Avenue will be closed for several days while crews repair a water leak near 1415 Union.
MLGW said the water line broke in the area of 1415 Union and said the left hand lanes would be closed for two to three days while they repaired the damage. Drivers should expect slower travel through Midtown and plan alternate routes until the pavement is restored.
Union Avenue is a Midtown and Medical District corridor in local geography notes, linking downtown edges to Midtown hospital and clinic blocks and carrying daily traffic past neighborhood businesses. A multi-day left-lane shutdown on that spine can push congestion onto parallel streets such as Poplar Avenue and nearby connectors.
Memphis Light, Gas and Water is the city utility handling the water-line repair, and the work sits on the Union Avenue Midtown Medical District corridor identified in city material as a primary commercial route. The Medical District and Midtown employment centers along that stretch mean morning and evening peak delays are likely while both directions keep a left lane offline.
Downtown Memphis sits west of the Midtown stretch, and Union Avenue helps knit the riverfront core to Midtown hospital campuses. Keeping both directions open with a left-lane restriction still leaves through traffic moving, but the utility repair will keep speeds lower until MLGW finishes the water-line work.
MLGW advised that the left lanes remain closed until the broken line is fixed and the repair window of two to three days is complete. Motorists heading through Midtown should watch for cones and crew trucks near 1415 Union and allow extra time for the remainder of the week.
