MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One driver was taken to a hospital Saturday morning after a two-vehicle crash ended with one of the cars inside a Smoothie King on Union Avenue in Midtown Memphis.
Dispatch records show Memphis police officers were sent to the business a little after 10 a.m. on Saturday. Police said two vehicles were involved and that one of them went into the building. Crews from both the Memphis Fire Department and the Memphis Police Department worked the scene.
The injured driver was listed in non-critical condition. Police did not say what caused the collision, whether anyone inside the shop was hurt, or whether either driver would face a citation, and the extent of the damage to the building was not released.
Union Avenue is one of the busiest commercial corridors in the city, running through Midtown and the Medical District and carrying a steady mix of commuters, hospital traffic and shoppers. The street also marks the southern edge of Midtown, the historic residential and cultural core of Memphis that takes in Overton Park, the Memphis Zoo and the Brooks Museum of Art.
Midtown sits between downtown and East Memphis, with Poplar Avenue along its northern side. The neighborhood grew up as a streetcar suburb in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and it is now the most walkable residential part of the city, with Overton Square, the restaurant row in Cooper-Young and several parks within reach on foot. Overton Park alone covers 342 acres, enough room for the zoo, the art museum and a nine-hole golf course.
