MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Tigers quarterback Marcus Stokes added a national award to a busy week of honors Tuesday, collecting Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week honors for his work in a 49-22 rout of Army.
Stokes, a redshirt junior, hit on 29 of 35 throws for 371 yards and four scores against the Black Knights. He also ran for 30 yards and a fifth touchdown. That made him the first Tiger ever to be responsible for at least five touchdowns in two straight games against Football Bowl Subdivision teams.
Brady White, in 2020, was the last Memphis passer to win the weekly Davey O’Brien honor. The full award goes each year to the top quarterback in college football and is the oldest prize of its kind for the position.
The recognition came a day after the league picked Stokes as its top offensive player for the week. Monday also brought spots on the Davey O’Brien Great 8 and on the weekly Manning Award stars list.
His season numbers put him among the best in the country. His 2,532 passing yards rank fifth nationally, and no one in the country has more than his 25 touchdown passes. His passing efficiency rating of 178.5 ranks third, and he runs an offense that sits fifth in the nation and leads all teams in first downs.
Memphis sits at 7-2 overall and 4-1 in American Conference play. The Tigers are off this week, then head to Florida for a Thursday night game at South Florida on Nov. 12, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Central. The Bulls, 6-2 and 2-2 in the league, play at East Carolina before that matchup.
