MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Homecoming weekend at the University of Memphis lands on Halloween this year, and the Tigers will spend the night trying to slow one of the country’s most stubborn ground games. Memphis hosts Army on Saturday, Oct. 31, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Central time.
The matchup has been a long time coming. It will be only the sixth meeting between the programs and the first since Nov. 23, 2002, when DeAngelo Williams carried Memphis to a 38-10 win at home. Just three current Tigers had even been born when that game was played.
Memphis arrives off a wild overtime win in which it rallied from two scores down, then sealed it on a scramble by quarterback Marcus Stokes and an interception by Ellis Ellis Jr. Stokes has thrown 21 touchdown passes, third-most in the nation. Receiver Hunter Tipton leads the team with 30 catches for 409 yards and five scores.
The Tigers are leaning on a remade roster. The program lists 81 newcomers, 20 true freshmen and 61 transfers, alongside 27 returning players. Memphis has also scored at least 15 points in 90 straight home games, the second-longest active run in the top division of college football, and has 113 wins since 2014.
Army comes to town on a high after beating Tulsa on the road with a field goal as the clock hit zero. Quarterback Cade Hellums has run for 719 yards and 13 touchdowns and has thrown for 358 more yards.
After the trip to Memphis, the Black Knights head home to West Point, N.Y., to face Air Force on Nov. 7, and they close the regular season against Navy on Dec. 12 in East Rutherford, N.J.
