Memphis weekend activities collage
Set aside any plans you had this weekend, because there’s an array of exciting events taking place in the city of Memphis. From poetry readings to art festivals, floral shows to puppy galas, and dance performances, there’s something to suit every taste and interest.
Start your weekend with the feast of art at the annual “Art in the Loop” festival. Taking place between Briarcrest Avenue and Ridge Bend Rd in East Memphis, artists of every medium from the local community await you. Their work will be available for sale – perfect for art enthusiasts looking for new additions to their collections.
Besides shopping, you can indulge in interactive sessions such as live demonstrations and musical performances featuring the Magnolia Wind Quintet, Lorraine String Quartet, and Prizm Ensemble. And if food is your passion, a host of food trucks like VooDoo Café, MemPops, Eat at Eric’s, Pok Cha’s Egg Rolls, and Peace Love Quesadillas will be on the ground to treat your taste buds.
Poetry lovers, take note! Acclaimed author Rachel Edelman’s debut collection of poetry, “Dear Memphis,” is something you should not miss this weekend. Edelman’s session at Novel this Friday is a fabulous opportunity to hear from her directly as she delves into the complex relationship she shares with the city, her “ancestry, inheritance, and the ecological possibility of imagining a future.” You can also get your copies signed and join further discussions on Saturday at Temple Israel at Crosstown.
The color and diversity of “Rhythm & Hues” at The Dixon Gallery and Gardens will surely mesmerize floral and art enthusiasts. Here at one of the eight major Garden Club of America flower shows, floral designers interpret their arrangements from pieces of the Dixon’s latest exhibition, “Memphis 2024,” which solely features Memphis artists. You can also look out for extensive sections on horticulture, conservation, natural compositions, and botanical jewelry and accessories at the show.
Got a furry friend or planning to adopt one? Head to the Puppy Palooza 2024 at Crosstown Concourse this Saturday. Enjoy an assortment of dog-friendly activities such as yard games, costume contests with grand prizes, caricature portraits, and free nail-clipping services. Local rescue organizations will also be offering pets for adoption.
To round off the weekend, immerse yourself in the magic of movement at the Springloaded — Tales of Light event by New Ballet Ensemble. Ranging from hip-hop to ballet, the diverse dance performances will narrate unheard stories exploring the dual nature of visible and inner light.
So gear up, Memphis! A weekend full of art, poetry, flowers, puppies, and dance awaits.
