South Main is an arts and residential district in converted industrial buildings. Monthly 'South Main Trolley Night' brings several hundred visitors to galleries, studios, and restaurants. The residential population skews young and creative, with loft apartments in former warehouses and manufacturing buildings.
History
South Main was a commercial and warehousing corridor in the early 20th century. Decline followed mid-century urban disinvestment. Arts district designation and preservation of the historic streetscape beginning in the 1990s initiated revitalization, with the National Civil Rights Museum (1991) providing a cultural anchor at the northern end.
