Renovations at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium with cranes and construction workers

News Summary

Memphis is set to implement significant renovations at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium ahead of the 2026 football season. The $226.5 million project, which has shifted to a two-phase plan, aims to enhance facilities, increase revenue opportunities, and diversify event offerings. Key features will include an expanded north tunnel, upgraded food service areas, and a large ribbon-style scoreboard. Additionally, a new plaza and suite redesigns will improve the overall experience and attract a variety of events to help offset previous financial losses.

Memphis – Significant renovations are set to take place at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, with plans for completion before the 2026 football season. The project, which aims to enhance the stadium’s facilities and increase its revenue-generating potential, received an updated design plan announcement from Athletic Director Ed Scott on June 20, 2025. With the budget for renovations increasing from $220 million to $226.5 million, Memphis is focused on securing additional funds to meet the overall financial goal.

The renovation process has shifted from an original three-phase plan to two phases, reflecting a push to expedite the construction timeline. Currently, the university has successfully raised $201 million towards the total project cost, highlighting a strong commitment to the initiative.

One of the key features of the upcoming renovations includes an expanded north tunnel, designed to accommodate large trucks for special events such as concerts. This addition is a significant factor influencing the budget increase. Furthermore, a new kitchen is being planned to serve food for all the suites on the rebuilt west side of the stadium, enhancing the overall food service experience for attendees.

In addition to these functional upgrades, the stadium has scheduled its first major concert in 25 years with a performance by Chris Brown slated for October 2025. This marks a shift toward revitalizing the venue as a multipurpose space aimed at attracting diverse events, which could help offset the $1 to $2 million annual losses the stadium previously experienced due to deferred maintenance and upkeep costs.

Memphis aims to minimize losses in the early years of the renovation and ultimately reach a break-even point through various events, including concerts, monster truck shows, motocross, and wrestling. A striking new ribbon-style scoreboard, which will stretch across approximately 70 yards, is expected to be one of the largest in the United States and will serve dual purposes, displaying advertisements and messages to attendees.

The upgrades will also include a redesigned west side scoreboard positioned above a new plaza that can accommodate about 2,000 fans. This plaza will feature semi-permanent bars as well as space for fans to enjoy games and gather, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The venue’s potential extends beyond sports, as the plaza could also host special events like weddings, providing an additional revenue stream.

In line with enhancing the stadium’s appeal, Scott has proposed changes to the founder’s club suites in order to boost sales, with most suites currently priced at $2.5 million each. The entrance to the stadium is also set for redesign to improve traffic flow from Tiger Lane, further enhancing the guest experience.

Another exciting element of the renovation project is the introduction of an area termed the “halo”, which will feature local vendors and food trucks, enriching the experience for fans as they enter the stadium.

The upcoming renovations to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium signify a pivotal development for the University of Memphis and its community, aiming to modernize facilities, increase revenues, and diversify the types of events that can be held at the stadium. With a commitment to completing these enhancements prior to the 2026 football season, the university is poised to reinvigorate one of its key athletic venues.
