A lively classroom for pre-kindergarten students in Shelby County.

News Summary

The Shelby County Commission has approved an expansion of universal prekindergarten services, allowing more families to access quality early education. Registration for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year is now open at five elementary schools, with spots available on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents must ensure their children meet eligibility requirements, and a public lottery will determine enrollment. There are also discussions on securing crucial funding to support preschool education in the area.

Exciting Development for Early Learners in Shelby County!

Good news for families in Shelby County! The Shelby County Commission has just given the green light for an expansion of universal prekindergarten services. This decision comes as a delightful opportunity for parents and their little ones, ensuring that many more children will have access to quality early education.

Time to Register!

Mark your calendars! Registration is now open for the Shelby County First Class Pre-K program for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year. Parents can enroll their children at five different elementary schools: Inverness Elementary, Oak Mountain Elementary, Shelby Elementary, Vincent Elementary, and Wilsonville Elementary. Each of these locations has roughly 18 openings available, making it important for families to act quickly!

To be eligible for this wonderful pre-K program, children must be four years old on or before September 1 of the respective school year. Do keep in mind, though, that children who are already set to start kindergarten cannot register for pre-K.

What’s Next after Registration?

Registration will be open until March, and here’s the exciting part — a public lottery drawing will determine who gets to join the pre-K programs! Families are encouraged to partake in the lottery drawing, as it’s a festive event to see who gets selected. However, an early registration doesn’t give any applicant priority over others. All registered families will have an equal shot.

In case children aren’t selected, they’ll be placed on a waitlist that is randomly generated, so there’s still a chance to get in if a spot opens up. Parents will be informed if a position becomes available, keeping everyone in the loop.

What Do You Need to Register?

For registration, parents should prepare a few important documents: a birth certificate, proof of residence, and an immunization record. Additionally, the public school zoning rules will influence which pre-K program a child can attend, so it’s worth checking that out as well. Should you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact your child’s respective school for more information!

Stay Updated on Funding!

$30 million in federal funding from the Tennessee Department of Education Head Start program! This funding is crucial as it impacts over 3,000 preschool families, providing them with affordable and sustainable educational options.

One board member has pointed out that it’s vital to secure more funding to support these Pre-K initiatives. Losing such significant resources could mean depriving a whole generation of young children of their chance for early educational opportunities and support!

Looking Ahead

The next opportunity to apply for funding is expected to be in October. The continuation of these funds depends on the absence of deficiencies this school year. If all goes well, the grant could become effective by July. So, there’s certainly a lot to keep an eye on as we progress through these changes!

Whether you’re looking to enroll your child in Pre-K or simply want to stay in touch with the latest educational developments, Shelby County is buzzing with opportunities!
