Significant Snowfall Blankets Philadelphia Region Amid Winter Storm

Sunday, January 19, 2025, brought a whirlwind of winter weather to the Philadelphia region, Pennsylvania suburbs, and South Jersey. As snowflakes danced down from the sky, residents experienced everything from cozy winter scenes to hazardous travel conditions.

Snow Totals Across the Region

The storm made its presence known, dropping impressive amounts of snow across different areas. Reports from the Lehigh Valley stood out, where some locations, like Ancient Oaks, received up to a whopping 7.3 inches of snow. The overall snowfall in the Lehigh Valley averaged over seven inches. Meanwhile, New Castle County saw a modest 1.8 inches at the airport, while those lingering in the warmth of Atlantic City only had to contend with 0.3 inches of snow.

A look through Burlington County revealed 2 inches in Lake Pine and 1.8 inches in Mount Holly. Not too far away, in Mercer County, totals had residents measuring 1.2 inches at Hamilton Square and 2.2 inches at the Trenton Mercer Airport. It seems everyone had their measuring sticks ready!

Steady Accumulation in Other Counties

Jumping over to Berks County, there were reports of 1.5 inches in Huffs Church, while Reading saw more substantial totals of 5.9 inches and even 6.5 inches in Sinking Spring. Bucks County showed some variation, with totals ranging from 1.5 inches in Bensalem to a robust 4 inches in East Rockhill Township.

Chester County did not disappoint either, showcasing 4 inches in Berwyn and 3.8 inches in Chesterbrook. Over in Delaware County, Newtown Township measured 2.8 inches of freshly fallen snow. The Lehigh County view was breathtaking with 5.5 inches in Allentown and 6.8 inches in Wescosville!

And let’s not forget about Monroe County, where Arlington Heights caught 4.7 inches of snow, while Montgomery County recorded 5.8 inches in New Hanover Township. In Northampton County, it was a slightly heavier scene with 6.6 inches in North Catasauqua.

Even our beloved Philadelphia had its share, recording 2 inches in Center City and 1.3 inches at Philadelphia International Airport. This snowfall began just hours before the kickoff of the highly-anticipated Eagles-Rams Divisional Round Playoff game.

A Snowy Kickoff!

Snow began to tumble just before the tailgating festivities, initiating around 11 a.m.. By halftime, the snowfall intensified, leading to some dramatic whiteout conditions and poor visibility as fans rooted for their team. If tackling the roads was a challenge, navigating the snowy stands was no walk in the park either!

Cold Front To Follow

Once the last flakes cleared, the region was met with a rapid cold front that promised to usher in the coldest air of the season. Expect single-digit overnight lows and highs barely breaking out of the teens or low 20s later in the week. It’s going to be one chilly week ahead!

Winter Storm Warnings lit up alerts for several counties, including Berks, Chester, Lehigh, western Montgomery, and upper Bucks counties. Snowfall totals were expected to range from 6 to 8 inches in these areas, while some northern parts of Northampton County and New Jersey could see griping totals upwards of 8 to 12 inches.

As always, residents are advised to drive carefully and stay warm indoors as this winter storm leaves its mark across the beautiful yet snowy landscapes of our region.
