Orange Mound is bounded by Lamar Avenue to the west, Airways Boulevard to the east, Park Avenue to the north, and Southern Avenue to the south, approximately 3 miles southeast of downtown.

## Character

        

Orange Mound has a historic African American community character with deep roots in Memphis's Black middle and working class. The neighborhood has an active community association and hosts the annual Orange Mound Community Day festival.

      
    
    
          
        

## History

        

Orange Mound was platted in 1890 specifically as a Black residential community on land south of the Midtown streetcar lines. By the early 20th century it had developed into a self-sufficient community with Black-owned businesses, churches, schools, and civic organizations.
