Two Motorcycle Deputies Injured in Separate Crashes in Lakeland, One in Critical Condition

Two Motorcycle Deputies Injured in Lakeland Crashes

Memphis, Tenn. — It was a troubling morning for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and for the local community as two motorcycle deputies were injured in separate accidents on US-64 in Lakeland. The incidents occurred just around 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday and left one deputy in critical condition.

What Happened on That Fateful Morning

According to the reports, the first deputy was involved in a crash when he was hit by a vehicle while he was on Highway 64 at Cobb Road. This initial collision set off a chain of events that would lead to another unfortunate accident. As the second deputy was rushing to respond to the first accident, he found himself in a serious situation. He was struck by another vehicle at a location not too far from the first crash, specifically at Highway 64, just east of Houston Levee.

Authorities quickly took the first deputy to Regional One Hospital in non-critical condition. However, the second deputy’s situation was much more severe, as he was taken in critical condition and is currently on life support. Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner has made an emotional plea to the community, urging everyone to pray for the injured deputies.

A Mother’s Heartfelt Account

In a story that reflects the concern and care of the community, a local woman shared her harrowing experience of witnessing one of these accidents. She was driving her two sons, aged 14 and 17, to school when a deputy struck her car from behind. The woman explained, “As I was making a left, I stopped at the stop sign. I proceeded to make my left turn and I saw the officer at least about half a mile away. By the time I completed my turn, just before I completed my turn, I noticed he hit the rear end of my vehicle.”

Worrying about the deputy’s safety was her immediate instinct. “My 17-year-old son ran to check on the deputy,” she recalled. She expressed her gratitude, saying, “I just thank God that he didn’t T-bone us and I pray that he’s ok. It seemed like he was trying to get out of the way but it just didn’t work out.”

The Aftermath

Due to the accidents, US-64 has been temporarily closed in both directions from Cobb Road to Houston Levee. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is currently conducting an investigation to determine what went wrong and how such incidents can be averted in the future.

In times like these, it’s a reminder of how swiftly life can change and the importance of looking out for one another. The injuries to the deputies and the woman’s close call serve as a wake-up call to all drivers to be extra cautious on the roads.

Community Support

As we wait for updates on the condition of the injured deputies, it’s heartwarming to see the community rallying together in support. Chief Buckner’s sentiments resonate deeply, and many locals are offering prayers and well wishes for a swift recovery. It’s clear that in Memphis and its surrounding areas, the bond between the community and those who protect it is strong, and moments like these only serve to reinforce that connection.

Conclusion

We will continue to monitor the situation and will share updates as they come in. Thank you for staying informed and for keeping these brave deputies in your thoughts and prayers. Stay safe out there, everyone!
