Location
Midtown spans the area between downtown and East Memphis, roughly bounded by Poplar Avenue to the north, Union Avenue to the south, Danny Thomas Boulevard to the west, and East Parkway to the east. Major cross-streets include McLean, Cooper, and Cleveland. I-240 is accessible from the eastern edge.

Midtown is the most culturally active and walkable residential area of Memphis. Overton Park's 342 acres contain the Memphis Zoo, the Brooks Museum, a nine-hole golf course, and the Old Forest. Cooper-Young is a dense walkable restaurant and bar district. The neighborhood ranges from high-historic Central Gardens to diverse mixed-income blocks.
History
Midtown developed as a streetcar suburb in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of the grand Victorian and craftsman homes date from 1890–1930. The neighborhood experienced decline in the 1970s–1990s and has undergone significant revitalization, led in part by the Cooper-Young Community Association and the Overton Park Conservancy.
