Memphis Tigers showcasing their skills at the Rhodes Invitational outdoor track season kickoff.
The University of Memphis track and field teams kicked off their outdoor season with impressive performances at the Rhodes Invitational held on March 14-15, 2025. Despite challenging weather conditions, the Tigers secured five event victories and numerous top-three finishes. Highlighted by recent indoor successes, Memphis athletes showcased remarkable talent and determination, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead as they prepare for the upcoming Ole Miss Classic and Bullog Alumni Relays.
Memphis, Tennessee – The University of Memphis track and field teams set the stage for an exciting outdoor season at the Rhodes Invitational held from March 14-15, 2025. Hosted by Rhodes College, the two-day event did not disappoint, showcasing incredible talent, perseverance, and a little fun in less-than-ideal weather conditions.
The outdoor season kickoff began on Friday, March 14, with events starting at 3:00 p.m., and Saturday saw the competition resume bright and early at 9:30 a.m. The Tigers were firing on all cylinders, eager to build on their recent success from the indoor season, where they achieved an impressive seven top-three finishes at the AAC Indoor Championships.
As a refreshing reminder, during the indoor season, the Memphis teams accomplished some remarkable feats. Sascha Salesius Schmidt stood out by winning a gold medal in the shot put. Additionally, the Memphis distance medley relay team not only defended their glory but also set a shiny new school record. To add icing on the cake, the women’s 4×400-meter relay team followed suit by breaking their own school record!
Fast forward to the Rhodes Invitational, and the Tigers continued to impress. Despite facing unfavorable weather and some delays, five Memphis athletes emerged as event winners. The determination and skill displayed by all nine Tigers who competed were commendable, with each athlete finishing within the top three of their respective events.
