News Summary

Students in the Memphis area are set to enjoy extended breaks in early 2024, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day and spring break. Several school districts will observe these holidays, allowing students time to recharge and spend time with family. This structured schedule also supports the well-being of educators. The breaks not only provide needed rest but also help families plan vacations and foster personal growth.

Memphis-Area Students to Enjoy Extended School Breaks in January and March 2024

Memphis-area students will benefit from several extended breaks in the early part of 2024, with significant time off scheduled for Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January and spring break in March. This year, students will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 20, prompting closures in several school districts.

Multiple school districts will participate in the federal holiday, including Arlington Community Schools, Bartlett City Schools, Collierville Schools, DeSoto County Schools, Germantown Municipal Schools, Lakeland Schools, Memphis-Shelby County Schools, and Millington Municipal Schools.

Following the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, students across these districts will also have another day off for President’s Day on Monday, February 17, further extending their winter break.

Spring Break Schedule

Spring break will provide another substantial break for students in the Memphis area. For DeSoto County Schools and Memphis-Shelby County Schools, spring break is set for March 10 to 14, 2024. Meanwhile, students attending Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland, and Millington Schools will have their break the following week, from March 17 to 21, 2024.

Additional Closures and Half Days

In addition to the extended breaks in January and March, there will be closures for Good Friday, which all schools will observe. However, only DeSoto County Schools will also recognize Easter Monday as a day off.

Students at Germantown Municipal Schools will experience a half day on Wednesday, May 21, while schools including Arlington Community Schools, Bartlett City Schools, Collierville Schools, and Lakeland Schools will hold half days on Thursday, May 22.

The academic year will conclude for DeSoto County Schools, Memphis-Shelby County Schools, and Millington Municipal Schools on Friday, May 23. Millington Schools will also conduct a half day for students on this date.

Context and Importance of Breaks

While the school year has only just begun, students and teachers are already looking forward to these scheduled breaks. Extended time off can provide essential rest and recovery for both students and educators, helping them to recharge and prepare for the weeks ahead. Creating a structured school calendar with designated breaks allows families to plan vacations or activities together, fostering both educational and personal growth.

As Memphis-area schools continue to navigate the academic year, the planning of future breaks supports the well-being of students while ensuring compliance with holidays observed at the federal and local levels.
