Utility workers addressing power outages in Memphis

News Summary

On a hot summer day, over 4,700 customers in Memphis faced power outages, particularly affecting areas near Cordova and East Raines Road. MLGW is investigating the outages and working to restore service while ensuring customer safety. Increased demand on the electrical grid, fueled by soaring temperatures, may have contributed to the situation. Customers are advised to report their issues and remain patient as repairs continue.

Memphis – Over 4,700 Memphis Light, Gas, and Water (MLGW) customers experienced power outages on the afternoon of Friday, June 20, 2025. The outages were reported shortly after noon, with the most affected area being near Cordova. A significant outage was also noted near East Raines Road and Kirby Parkway, impacting over 2,000 customers in that vicinity. By 4:55 p.m., the number of outages had risen to 4,785 customers.

MLGW troubleshooters were dispatched to several outage locations to investigate and assess the causes of the power issues. While service restoration efforts were already underway, the specific reasons behind the outages were still under investigation. Customers affected by these outages were advised to report their circumstances by calling 544-6500 or using the MLGW My Account online service.

The outages occurred on a particularly warm summer day, with temperatures soaring close to 95°F. The weather forecast indicated a slight chance of rain, estimated at 30%, although generally clear conditions were expected to prevail as the evening approached. This sudden surge in temperature may have contributed to increased demand on the electrical grid, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities within the system.

As the situation unfolded, MLGW continued to keep customers informed about the ongoing repairs and restoration efforts. On-site troubleshooting crews were working diligently to pinpoint the disruptions and restore power as swiftly as possible.

In the backdrop of these outages, the region had been experiencing ongoing weather conditions. A slight risk of severe weather had been noted, possibly compounding issues for utility providers and increasing the stress on electrical infrastructure. This added a layer of complexity for MLGW as they worked to stabilize the situation and prioritize safety for all customers.

As of the latest updates, the majority of affected customers remained without power, and MLGW continued to mobilize their resources in an effort to bring service back online. The utility company is focused on ensuring that all customers receive timely updates regarding their service status and the steps being taken towards restoration.

This incident highlights the pressure faced by utility companies during periods of extreme weather, where the combination of high temperatures and localized outages can strain electrical systems. As Memphis experiences rising summer temperatures, incidents like this may become more prevalent, raising concerns about infrastructure resilience and preparedness for future power demands.

Customers are encouraged to remain patient as MLGW works through this challenge. The utility company has emphasized that it is committed to restoring service promptly while ensuring the safety of both its workers and the public.
