Memphis Prepares for Major Holy Convocation and Community Giving Event

Memphis Gears Up for a Heartwarming Holy Convocation Celebration

MEMPHIS, Tenn. โ€” Get ready, folks! Next week, the city of Memphis will welcome over 30,000 members from the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) for their 116th Holy Convocation. To kick off the festivities, the Church hosted an incredible event called โ€œChristmas in Novemberโ€ this past Saturday morning in southeast Memphis, bringing smiles and essentials to many in need.

A Community United

โ€œWe want to have a big impact on the city of Memphis while we came here for the convention,โ€ expressed Bishop Brandon B. Porter, a General Board member and coordinator of the event. Bishop Porter, who is also associated with the Greater Community Temple Church of God in Christ, emphasized the heart behind the giveaway. โ€œWe even got volunteers from COGIC that came in early from Connecticut, Alabama, and various places,โ€ he said, showcasing the unity and spirit of giving that the Church embodies.

As part of the preparations, volunteer coordinator Kristen Porter stated, โ€œWe prepare for this year-round because, as you can see, itโ€™s one of our ministriesโ€™ largest events.โ€ More than 10,000 people even pre-registered to ensure they would get the help they needed.

Making a Difference for Families

At the giveaway, lucky attendees found a wide array of items available for free, including groceries, clothes, household goods, and even furniture. The event was not just about giving away items; it was also about spreading love and offering hope. โ€œWe start with service,โ€ said Shirley Perpener, the Supervisor of Women for TN Central Jurisdiction. โ€œOffer Christ to everyone and then the giving away of baby clothing.โ€

We met some wonderful families at the event, including 11-year-old Tyler Williams, who arrived with his mother. โ€œI just woke up, and she told me to get dressed,โ€ Tyler shared, capturing the excitement of the morning. His mother, Zaneka Cuble, was thrilled to be there as she prepares for new beginnings as a grandmother. โ€œIโ€™m finna be a grandma three times. Yes, November, December, and January,โ€ she exclaimed. โ€œSo, Iโ€™m here to try to get stuff for my grandbabies and help my children out with the babies.โ€

Addressing Community Needs

Bishop Porter expressed his gratitude for the turnout, stating, โ€œTo see the thousands that are already here, that were here as early as six oโ€™clock in the morning says to you that there is a great need in the city of Memphis.โ€ He pointed out the significance of the event to address issues like food deserts and various health challenges in the area. โ€œMinistry is finding a need and meeting it,โ€ he added, highlighting the Churchโ€™s commitment to making a difference.

Looking Ahead

The COGIC Holy Convocation kicks off on Tuesday and will run through November 12, providing a week packed with worship, fellowship, and opportunities for spiritual growth. The excitement is palpable, and itโ€™s heartening to see such a tremendous outreach event bringing the community together.

As Memphis prepares to embrace its visitors and bless its residents, itโ€™s a reminder of the power of community and service. Whether youโ€™re stopping by for the convocation or just enjoying the spirit of giving, Memphis is certainly the place to be this November!
