The Memphis Grizzlies strategizing during a training session.
The Memphis Grizzlies have made a significant change to their roster by trading Marcus Smart to the Washington Wizards in a bold three-team deal. Alongside Smart, they sent a 2025 first-round pick and Jake LaRavia to the Sacramento Kings. In return, the Grizzlies received Marvin Bagley III and Johnny Davis, aiming to create financial flexibility and enhance their future options as they prepare for the rest of the season.
In a significant move just before the NBA trade deadline, the Memphis Grizzlies have officially traded Marcus Smart to the Washington Wizards in a three-team deal. Along with Smart, the Grizzlies also shipped off a 2025 first-round pick while sending Jake LaRavia over to the Sacramento Kings. In return, Memphis welcomed former No. 2 overall pick Marvin Bagley III and Johnny Davis from Washington, along with two additional second-round picks to help bolster their future options.
Marcus Smart, known for his tenacity on defense and a winner of the Kia Defensive Player of the Year award in the 2021-22 season with the Boston Celtics, found himself on the move once again. After being traded to the Grizzlies in June 2023, Smart struggled with injuries, playing only a limited 19 games this season and averaging 8.7 points, 3.7 assists, and 1.2 steals. Unfortunately for Memphis, Smart’s health issues meant he missed more games in their jersey than he did in Boston, prompting the Grizzlies to consider other options.
This trade comes partly due to a desire to alleviate Smart’s hefty $21.6 million salary that looms next season. The Grizzlies are looking to create roster flexibility for the future, especially with fellow star Jaren Jackson Jr. becoming eligible for a contract extension. With Smart’s departure, Memphis can now explore the possibility of reworking Jackson’s contract to keep their core talent intact.
Bringing in Marvin Bagley III, the big man who was once considered a top prospect in the 2018 NBA Draft, Memphis is hoping to ignite his potential. Bagley, who has played in only 19 games this season averaging 4.9 points and 2.9 rebounds, has the opportunity to prove his worth in a new setting. Meanwhile, Johnny Davis, selected 10th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, has faced challenges in his rookie season, averaging just 2.4 points over 34 games. The Grizzlies are banking on these new players to rejuvenate their lineup.
Despite the shake-up, the Grizzlies boast a solid record of 35-16, showing promise as they head into the crucial part of the season. With Coach Taylor Jenkins at the helm, the team will use the remainder of the season to determine player roles and how to distribute minutes effectively among the roster, especially with the influx of new talent.
The upcoming weeks will be vital for the Grizzlies as they adjust to their new roster dynamics. They may have to manage an even larger rotation throughout the regular season following this deal. Meanwhile, the Wizards, enduring a tough season with a woeful 9-41 record, are looking to integrate Smart into their rebuilding efforts, as they shoot for brighter days ahead.
For Marcus Smart, this trade is yet another chapter in his career, marking the second time he has been traded in less than two years. As Memphis turns the page after the trade, fans are left wondering what’s next for their beloved team and how these changes will impact their pursuit of success this season.
