The University of Memphis celebrated a historic milestone on May 10, 2025, during its 113th spring commencement ceremony, where 2,759 students graduated, marking the largest graduating class in the university’s history. This impressive cohort included 1,707 undergraduates, 88 juris doctors, 722 master’s students and specialists, and 87 doctoral graduates, making this year also notable for having the largest group of doctoral graduates ever.
The commencement ceremony took place at the FedExForum, drawing a large audience to witness the students receive their diplomas. The keynote address was given by Ben C. Bryant Jr., a prominent business executive and alumnus of the University of Memphis. Bryant holds a degree in accounting, which he earned in 1968, and he later obtained a master’s degree in management information systems in 1995.
Graduate Highlights
Among the graduates were two individuals whose journeys to completion exemplify resilience and determination. Tabatha Riquelme, who immigrated to Memphis from Veracruz, Mexico, faced numerous obstacles such as language, cultural adaptation, and financial struggles. Despite these challenges, she successfully earned a degree in commercial aviation. Along the way, Riquelme secured multiple pilot licenses, worked as a pilot instructor, and was active in the university community by serving as president of the International Student Association for two years and working at the International Center to assist other international students.
Riquelme described her degree as a representation of perseverance, hard work, and the invaluable support she received from peers and faculty. She plans to further her education by pursuing a master’s in engineering management and aspires to become an airline pilot.
Also graduating was Evan Erickson, who received a Bachelor of Music in Composition. He faced significant health challenges, being diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in August 2024. To complete his degree, Erickson moved back to Dubuque, Iowa, and utilized the university’s global online program. During his time at U of M, he achieved national recognition by winning The American Prize in Composition and initiated a charity effort that raised $10,000 to support marginalized music composers.
Commencement Experience
Both Riquelme and Erickson shared their inspirational stories during the graduation ceremony, highlighting their personal challenges and triumphs. The graduation event was free to the public, allowing friends, family, and community members to attend and celebrate the accomplishments of the graduates. For those unable to attend in person, the ceremony was streamed live, ensuring that everyone could witness this proud moment.
