Memphis Gas Station Closes After Investigation Reveals Over 700 Criminal Incidents

Memphis Gas Station Shut Down Due to Criminal Activity

In Memphis, Tennessee, a beloved local gas station has met an unfortunate fate as it has been temporarily shut down after being deemed a public nuisance. The Tiger Mart gas station, located on Jackson Avenue, has been a frequent stop for many commuters and residents, but now it sits empty, surrounded by caution tape, leaving many customers scratching their heads.

Investigation Findings

According to the Memphis Police Department’s Organized Crime Unit, the gas station has been under investigation due to a startlingly high number of police dispatches related to various criminal activities. From August 6, 2022, to May 2024, the police logged around 736 calls, with reports that included serious crimes such as murder, thefts, and drug violations.

More specifically, from April 1, 2022, to June 6, 2024, authorities recorded 103 reports of crime linked to the gas station. The report detailed disturbing incidents, which ranged from robberies and carjackings to less violent offenses like vandalism and shoplifting. This surge in criminal activity prompted action from the law enforcement community.

Court Decision

After an extensive investigation, detectives filed their findings with the Shelby County Attorney General’s Office. As a result, on August 29, 2024, a temporary injunction was granted by the Shelby County General Sessions Court, officially deeming Tiger Mart a public nuisance and ordering its closure.

Community Reactions

Local customers are understandably upset about the shutdown. They acknowledge the serious issues at hand but hope for the station’s return with enhanced safety measures. “The gas station is what is stopping folks. They be sitting at the gas pumps and stuff like that,” mentioned a long-time customer, who expressed concern over the crowds lingering around the lot.

Another devoted Tiger Mart patron, Annette, conveyed her frustration about the situation: “It’s just too many people hanging out there, and sometimes it’s hard to get on the lot.” She recounted the day of the shutdown, stating, “I was one of the people in the store when they brought us out. We didn’t know what was going on; they just told everybody to come out.” Despite the closing, she praised the store’s customer service and food offerings, highlighting that the real issue lies outside its doors.

Path to Reopening

According to the Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy’s office, several other businesses were temporarily shut down for similar reasons over the past two years, and most have since reopened. For Tiger Mart to follow suit, the owners will need to address several criteria before they can welcome back customers. These include installing more lighting, putting up a “no trespassing” sign, enhancing video surveillance, and hiring adequate security personnel.

Owners of Tiger Mart are scheduled to appear in court on September 10 at 9 a.m. to discuss potential steps forward. With the community eagerly awaiting updates, it remains to be seen what changes will take place at their favorite gas station.

As the residents of Memphis hold their breaths for Tiger Mart’s potential reopening, they hope that safety measures will improve, making their beloved gas station a secure place to refuel again.
