Memphis Offers Free Back-to-School Vaccination Events

Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) are providing free back-to-school vaccination events this summer to assist families in getting their children vaccinated before the upcoming school year. These immunization events are organized in collaboration with the Shelby County Health Department and will occur at multiple locations throughout the summer.

The next scheduled vaccination event is on Saturday, June 28, at 814 Jefferson Avenue, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The initiative is open to all children aged 17 and under and is designed to ensure that families have access to necessary immunizations and immunization records without any cost.

Vaccination Event Schedule

  • May 17: Community Care Fair at 1616 Ash Street, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • May 31: Community Care Fair at 369 GE Patterson, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • June 21: Community Care Fair at 3766 Ridgeway Road, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • July 12: Community Care Fair at 2590 Park Avenue, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • July 19: TLA at 2485 Union Avenue, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • July 26: Community Care Fair at 584 E. McLemore Avenue, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • August 2: Memphis Sports and Events Center at 995 Early Maxwell Boulevard, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • August 16: TLA at 2485 Union Avenue, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

During these events, parents are encouraged to bring their child’s insurance card and vaccination records. If records are misplaced, the health department will assist by providing necessary documentation on-site.

Health Department Services

The Shelby County Health Department will be open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., allowing families to walk in or schedule appointments for vaccinations. To arrange an appointment, parents can call 901-222-9980.

This effort emphasizes community health and aims to increase vaccination rates among children and adolescents. Notably, the health department has partnered with local health entities such as Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, UT Health Science Center, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to provide comprehensive immunization services.

Community Engagement

One of the key components of the community engagement strategy includes the Community Care Fair in South Memphis, which combines health services with family-friendly activities. The fair will feature free food, music, and various health department services alongside the vaccination clinics, making it a festive and informative event for families.

Importance of Vaccination

Through these proactive efforts, MSCS and the Shelby County Health Department aim to alleviate barriers to accessing health care and support families in preparing for a successful school year.
