Memphis Man Charged with Burglary and Car Theft After Stealing Couple’s Vehicle During Vacation

In a curious turn of events, a man from Memphis finds himself facing serious charges after he allegedly broke into a couple’s home and stole their car while they were off enjoying a vacation. Jevonte Williams has been hit with multiple charges, including aggravated burglary, theft of property valued between $10,000 and $60,000, theft of property valued at $1,000 or less, and evading arrest.

This unfortunate incident began when the couple, who were simply trying to enjoy some time away, left their home on Dunn Avenue on February 27, 2025. They were gone for a mere few days but returned on March 3 only to discover that their beloved 2018 Volkswagen Atlas was nowhere to be found, and their home had been rummaged through.

A Shocking Return from Vacation

Walking into a disheveled home is not the welcome anyone hopes for after a getaway. Officers arrived to find evidence of a break-in; the living room door had been pried open and one of the bedroom windows was shattered. To make things worse, the couple had left their car keys right inside the house, a decision that might haunt them now.

Fast forward to March 6, 2025, and the detectives working the case made a major discovery. They spotted the stolen Volkswagen parked in the lot of Superlo on Quince Road. To their surprise, the driver was none other than Williams himself, sitting behind the wheel of the very vehicle that had vanished from the couple’s driveway.

A Failed Escape

When detectives approached to make an arrest, Williams decided that running was a better option. They attempted to apprehend him, but what followed was a dizzying foot chase. Williams fled the scene, jumping a fence and making a slippery getaway through a nearby drainage ditch. Despite the initial chaos, officers managed to set up a perimeter in hopes of catching him.

It wasn’t long before they found Williams hiding in that same drainage ditch behind a home on Kimball Avenue. A search of his person yielded a surprising discovery: a key fob for the stolen Volkswagen! To add another twist to the tale, there were also several packages addressed to a residence on Dothan Street found inside the recovered car. These packages had reportedly been snatched from the porch of the Dothan Street home earlier that very day.

Surveillance Footage and a Hospital Visit

With surveillance footage linking Williams to the theft of those packages, investigators pieced together the puzzle of his escapades. The tangled web he spun was getting tighter around him. Following his arrest, Williams was taken to St. Francis Hospital on Park Avenue for examination. Once there, he claimed the shocking tale that he had purchased the stolen car from someone named โ€œC-Lo.โ€ Unfortunately for him, he didnโ€™t have any further details to support that story.

This bizarre case raises quite a few eyebrows and reminds us all of the importance of securing our homes and vehicles, especially before heading off on vacation. As Williams awaits his day in court, one can only hope the couple finds some peace amidst the chaos of their disrupted lives.
