Police investigating a recent burglary in Memphis
Mario Eddins, a former employee of Firstkey Homes, has been arrested in Memphis for a series of burglaries following his termination from the property management company. The 38-year-old faces multiple charges, including aggravated burglary and theft. The investigation, which started with reports of stolen property, revealed a pattern of thefts linked to Eddins’ prior access to the homes he targeted. Authorities have gathered substantial evidence, including video footage, leading to his confession.
Mario Eddins, a 38-year-old man, has been arrested by Memphis police after admitting to stealing from multiple homes in a spree linked to his previous employment with Firstkey Homes, a property management company. Eddins, who was terminated from the company about two months ago, now faces serious charges including burglary of a building, five counts of aggravated burglary, and five counts of theft of property.
The investigation into these burglaries began on April 13 when deputies responded to a report in Southeast Shelby County. A homeowner reported that a refrigerator and a ring camera had been stolen, with the property last checked on April 1 by an employee of Firstkey Homes. The burglars gained entry using a key box located on the front door, which is a common method for property management companies to allow access for maintenance and inspections.
Following this incident, detectives noticed a troubling pattern of burglaries affecting properties managed by Firstkey Homes in the local area. On April 7, security officials reported that two homes had been burglarized the day prior. One residence had a hidden camera capturing footage of three male suspects taking appliances. Upon reviewing the footage, investigators managed to identify one of the suspects as Mario Eddins, who had been fired from the company in March.
On April 7, based on the accumulated evidence, an arrest warrant for aggravated burglary was issued for Eddins. Just a few days later, on April 10, detectives obtained video footage showing a gray pickup truck involved in the theft of a refrigerator from a home on April 1. Data from a flock camera system identified the truck and linked it to Eddins, who was seen driving a black Honda Accord near the theft site.
Subsequently, on April 24, detectives executed a search warrant on the individual driving the gray pickup truck. This led them to Eddins after they discovered further evidence tying him to the burglaries. During questioning, Eddins confessed to six out of the fifteen identified burglaries involving Firstkey Home properties. He claimed that his actions were a form of retaliation against the company for his termination.
Law enforcement authorities continued their investigation by executing another search warrant on May 6. This search uncovered photographs on Eddins’ phone and iPad that depicted various appliances taken from the burglarized homes, further solidifying the case against him. Eddins is expected to face legal repercussions for his actions, with a court appearance scheduled for Thursday morning.
Firstkey Homes is a prominent property management company that manages a large portfolio of rental properties. Employees within such companies typically have access to homes, which can occasionally lead to concerns about theft or other illegal activities by those who have been dismissed. In recent years, there have been increased calls for stricter security measures and background checks for employees working in property management to protect property owners and residents alike.
The case against Mario Eddins raises pertinent questions about employee conduct after termination and the vulnerability of rental properties to crime, particularly when access protocols may be exploited. The ongoing investigation aims to address these issues and bring Eddins to account for his alleged criminal activities.
