Memphis – The Memphis Botanic Garden is currently showcasing a unique exhibition featuring six large troll sculptures designed by Danish artist Thomas Dambo. This exhibit runs from February 1 through May 21 and aims to raise awareness about conservation and environmental issues while engaging visitors in a whimsical experience.

The troll sculptures are made from recycled materials, primarily utilizing wood sourced from pallets and scrap wood. Each troll has been crafted to convey messages about ecological mindfulness and humanity’s relationship with nature. Their friendly demeanor, complete with broad smiles and oversized Hobbit-like feet, is designed to draw in audiences who may not regularly visit a botanical garden.

Each of the six trolls has its own name and backstory that reflect characteristics tied to nature. For instance, “Ibbi Pip” is portrayed as handy and optimistic, encouraging a positive connection with the environment. Another troll, named “Sofus Lotus,” is depicted as mindful of the natural world, emphasizing the importance of caring for our surroundings. These creative narratives aim to foster a deeper understanding of environmental conservation among visitors.

The trolls were on a two-year tour before arriving in Memphis, having previously made stops in major cities such as Atlanta and Philadelphia. This exhibition aims to attract a wider audience, encouraging more visitors to engage with the garden and its mission to enhance lives by connecting people with nature.

In addition to the visual experience, the Memphis Botanic Garden provides free visitor guides. These guides include a map of the trolls’ locations within the garden and translations for their unique “trollphabet” language, adding an interactive layer to the experience.

The Memphis Botanic Garden is located at 750 Cherry Road. Regular admission prices apply, and patrons are invited to explore the beauty of the garden while appreciating this innovative art installation. The exhibition aligns with the garden’s overarching goal of promoting environmental appreciation and community engagement.

Through art, storytelling, and a focus on sustainability, the Unique Troll Exhibition serves as a creative and playful reminder of the importance of conservation efforts. It invites individuals and families to discover the joys of nature while learning about the collective responsibilities we all have in protecting the environment.
