News Summary

Memphis has inaugurated the new Office of Memphis Programs for Meharry Medical College, marking its first satellite campus. This expansion aims to enhance local healthcare and educational access, especially for underrepresented communities, through a $310 million development project that includes healthcare initiatives and facilities. The new office, located at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, will offer clinical training while addressing critical health challenges faced by the community.

Memphis Welcomes Meharry Medical College’s New Training Center

Memphis has taken a significant step in improving local healthcare and educational accessibility with the official expansion of Meharry Medical College. The historically Black medical institution, based in Nashville, inaugurated its new Office of Memphis Programs on June 9, 2025, during a press conference and ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by approximately 200 people.

Located on the campus of Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church in Memphis’ medical district, this expansion marks Meharry Medical College’s first satellite campus. Dr. James E.K. Hildreth, president and CEO of the college, highlighted that Meharry now considers itself a Memphis institution and plans to remain in the community long-term. This new office positions Meharry alongside LeMoyne-Owen College as one of only two HBCUs in the city.

Development and Community Impact

The establishment of the Office of Memphis Programs is part of a larger $310 million mixed-use development project surrounding the church, aimed at enhancing healthcare access and expanding educational opportunities for underrepresented communities. Local health data indicates Shelby County exhibits heart disease rates exceeding the national average, prompting leaders to advocate for Meharry’s involvement in local healthcare initiatives.

The development plan encompasses a variety of facilities, including the construction of 603 multifamily housing units, a 125-room hotel, and more than 90,000 square feet dedicated to health and wellness facilities. In addition, a parking structure designed to accommodate over 1,000 vehicles will be part of the project.

Healthcare Initiatives

As part of its operations in Memphis, the Meharry Health Network has acquired four medical clinics previously owned by Sanita USA. These clinics will now provide a range of healthcare services within the community. Community outreach programs have already commenced, with students beginning clinical training that integrates patient care across Shelby County.

The collaboration between Meharry Medical College and Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church signifies an intersection of faith and healthcare, building a foundation for community support and health initiatives.

Educational Facilities and Plans for Growth

The newly established office is now operational, ready to support students through clinical training. The facility will include classrooms, faculty offices, and a student lounge, ensuring that students receive the same quality education they would experience at the main Nashville campus, while remaining close to home in Tennessee. In addition to current offerings, there are aspirations for a future full branch campus in Memphis, further enhancing training opportunities for students.

Addressing Health Challenges

Meharry Medical College’s expansion into Memphis directly addresses chronic health issues in the region, including high rates of HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and obesity. By focusing on these health challenges, the college aims to provide targeted educational and healthcare initiatives that benefit the local community.

The financing method for the development will employ a mixed-use strategy, moving away from traditional grant funding. This approach emphasizes inclusion for low-income families in the housing developments, aligning with the broader mission to foster equity and support within the community.

The expansion of Meharry Medical College into Memphis is a pivotal moment for the city, illustrating a commitment to healthcare and education that can have lasting impacts on underserved populations.
