Memphis – La Roche, a new Lebanese restaurant, has officially opened its doors at 916 South Cooper Street in the Cooper-Young neighborhood. Owned by Mustapha Mustapha and Mounir El-Mourabi, who previously operated the area’s Cedars restaurant, La Roche aims to elevate the local dining experience with its focus on authentic Lebanese cuisine and a home-cooked meal atmosphere.
The new establishment is named after the historic Al Raouche Rocks in Beirut, Lebanon, emphasizing its commitment to delivering genuine Lebanese culinary experiences. Guests can expect a marked departure from the fast-food vibe of Cedars, as La Roche seeks to create a more inviting and intimate setting reminiscent of traditional Lebanese hospitality.
Since its recent opening during this year’s Cooper-Young Festival, La Roche has quickly gained a positive reputation among patrons, who have praised the restaurant for its freshness and meticulous attention to seasoning and preparation. The menu, thoughtfully curated, features a variety of cold and hot appetizers, main dishes, and desserts.
La Roche serves an array of cold appetizers that include tabouli, fattoush, hummus, muhammara, grape leaves, and baba ghanouj. These dishes represent some of the most popular flavors of Lebanese cuisine, appealing to both enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
For those wanting something heartier, the hot appetizers feature kibbeh, falafel, sambousek, cheese rolls, and potato harra. Notably, the sambousek is filled with a savory mix of ground beef, onions, and pine nuts, enhanced with a blend of spices such as coriander, cinnamon, and nutmeg, making it a standout offering.
Entrees include a mixed grill platter that showcases an assortment of beef, chicken, and kafta, paired with hummus, saffron-seasoned rice, roasted tomatoes, and red onions. A vegetarian platter is also available, featuring dishes such as baba ghanouj, muhammara, and falafel, catering to various dietary preferences.
Adding to La Roche’s unique atmosphere is staff member Arin El-Mourabi, who contributes a personal touch to the dining experience as the wife of co-owner Mounir El-Mourabi. Together, the owners and team strive to ensure that each guest feels welcomed and taken care of in a setting that mirrors the warmth of home-cooked meals.
La Roche doesn’t compromise on quality, using locally baked pita bread and plans to introduce an in-house baker in the future. Desserts are also a significant focus, with the restaurant offering traditional baklava that is shipped directly from Beirut to maintain authenticity and quality.
Since its launch, La Roche has been embraced by the local community, rapidly acquiring a loyal customer base drawn to its dedication to authentic Lebanese flavors and a more composed dining experience. With its commitment to quality and a focus on familial hospitality, La Roche sets itself apart from other eateries in the area, promising a memorable culinary adventure for its patrons.
As La Roche continues to grow in popularity within Cooper-Young, it embodies an exciting addition to the neighborhood’s culinary scene, promising to delight visitors with true flavors of Lebanon.
