"First-time Homeowner in Memphis"

First time Memphis homebuyer finds the perfect place in Sherwood Forest

A Dream Come True

Recent college graduate Colin Chapman had always envisioned his first home to be a space he could call his own. After attending a first-time homeowner seminar led by experienced realtor Regi Stevenson, Colin discovered that owning a home was more attainable than he had first thought. Eagerly, he embarked on a mission to find his dream home using the insight gained from the seminar, starting with creating a proverbial Wish List.

The Wish List

Hardwood floors, enough space to entertain and a small backyard – these were the items on Colin’s wishlist. A house that held a sense of history and charm was an imperative, but what mattered most was its location. Colin, who balances his work commitments as an adjunct professor at the University of Memphis and executive assistant to interior designer Carmeon Hamilton, had a strong preference for a home situated in the University District.

Pursuit and Acquisition of The Dream Home

Realizing his budget would require him to undertake certain renovations to transform a house into a home, Colin nonetheless embraced the challenge thanks to his passion for interior design. After touring eight different properties with Regi, Colin discovered a 1,400 square-foot, ranch-style house in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood. Featuring three bedrooms, a bathroom with original tile flooring, an attic, a bonus room and a separate laundry room, this property boasted $53,000 worth of upgrades done in 2020. Upon making a full-price offer, the previous owner even agreed to replace the roof. This house came with a price tag of $124,900.

Transforming House into a Home

From the moment Colin stepped into the house he knew he had found the one. The hardwood floors, crown molding, and vintage charm stole his heart. Although he plans to completely renovate the kitchen, currently furnished with black appliances and simple white cabinets, and refresh each room with vibrant colors. His vision for the exterior includes painting the house a deep navy blue and adding a new fence to enhance its curb appeal.

The New Life in Sherwood Forest Neighborhood

To Colin, the biggest perk of owning his home is having a space he can truly call his own. Moreover, the sense of community, quietness, and beauty of the Sherwood Forest neighborhood, with its mature trees and landscaping, adds to the charm of his new home.
