Cold Weather Advisory for Memphis and the Mid-South

Hey there, Memphis! Get ready to bundle up because we’ve got a tough patch of frigid weather headed our way. A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued for our city and all of the Mid-South, starting at 12 midnight tonight and lasting through 12 noon Friday. So, if you’re planning to step outside, you might want to think twice!

Chilly Temperatures Ahead

As temperatures drop Thursday night into Friday morning, we’re looking at a chilly low hovering around 10 degrees. But that’s not all; with the wind chill factored in, it could feel as frigid as just 3 degrees. This means there’s an increased risk of hypothermia for anyone exposed to the cold for too long. Definitely not the kind of weather where you want to be hanging around outside without proper gear!

School Closures and Virtual Learning

With all this icy business going on, schools across the district are making plans to keep students safe. Memphis-Shelby County Schools will be closed on Friday. If you’re a parent or student, be sure to check for updates from your school district regarding virtual classes or any changes to their schedules.

Safeguarding Energy Use

In light of the extreme cold, Memphis Light, Gas & Water is asking all customers to cut back on their energy consumption between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Thursday and Friday. Every little bit helps during these bone-chilling days!

Road Conditions and Travel Alerts

12 motor vehicle accidents were reported in DeSoto County due to icy conditions. Major highways like I-55 and I-269 are experiencing heavy traffic delays, as several vehicles have skidded off the road. So, take it slow and drive safely out there!

Air Travel

As for those catching flights, Memphis International Airport is currently operating with minimal disruption. As of 9 a.m., they reported just one flight cancellation and five delays. So, if you’re flying out or picking someone up, you might want to check the status of specific flights.

Changes to Local Transit

And for those relying on public transportation, be on the lookout as MATA is adjusting bus routes due to the weather. Limited services will be available from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. during this cold spell.

Winter Storm Warnings and Piling Snow

In addition to the cold, a winter storm warning is also in effect, with predictions of heavy snow accumulations exceeding three inches. In fact, remember back to January 2025? That was a wild one, bringing up to 8 inches in parts of the Memphis metro area! Looks like we’re in for a bit of a winter wonderland, though it might be a bit dangerous to venture out for snowmen.

Stay Warm and Stay Safe!

The National Weather Service indicates we’ll be colder than Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday, which is certainly a fun comparison to chew on while we keep warm. Just remember that prolonged exposure can lead to hypothermia or even frostbite within just 30 minutes. So, keep an eye on your loved ones, especially those who might be a bit more vulnerable.

Looking Ahead

The good news is that the forecast looks like it will gradually warm up over the next few days, with a high of 32 degrees on Friday and potentially climbing all the way to the low 60s by Monday. So hang in there, Memphis! Springtime weather is just around the corner.
