Foreign Brands Profit from Memorial Merchandise After Tragedy

Collage of patriotic merchandise related to national tragedy

News Summary

In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, various brands have rapidly released memorial merchandise, stirring controversy over the commercialization of grief. Companies like ‘See Jesus In You’ and ‘Liberty Faith Gear’ have launched products claiming to support Kirk’s legacy, despite no affiliation with his organization. This trend raises ethical questions as advertisements continue to exploit national sentiment, resulting in swift profit for many foreign e-commerce brands. Meanwhile, Turning Point USA is witnessing a surge in interest amidst the ongoing discussions surrounding Kirk’s impact and the political implications of his death.

Foreign Brands Jump on the Bandwagon Following Charlie Kirk’s Assassination

Just hours after the tragic news of Charlie Kirk’s assassination was confirmed, a flurry of ads featuring memorial merchandise exploded across social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. This rapid marketing surge has raised eyebrows as countless companies seek to profit from a moment of national tragedy.

Turning Grief into Profit

Among the merchandise that caught attention was a shirt being offered by the brand โ€œSee Jesus In You.โ€ This shirt, dubbed โ€œEcho of Freedom,โ€ sports the American flag and proudly features Kirk’s signature. The marketing message behind it claims that Kirk was a beacon of โ€œfaith, liberty, and America.โ€ Furthermore, his supporters have quickly rallied around a shirt he wore on the day of his assassination, making it a hot-seller among conservative circles.

On the other side of the spectrum, another brand known as โ€œLiberty Faith Gearโ€ presented a similarly themed shirt which urges โ€œpatriots to rise when freedom is attacked.โ€ Both brands, however, are not affiliated with Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA (TPUSA), and are operated out of China.

Behind the Brands

Operating under the umbrella of Guangzhou Shiwei Network Technology, which is based in Panyu, Guangdong, these brands specialize in cross-border e-commerce. The Guardian has uncovered that at least seven other foreign companies are also marketing Kirk-themed products from overseas, including names like Harbin Huanjia Trading Limited and Jinhua Hongrun E-Commerce.

In a somewhat misleading twist, many of these advertisements claim that profits from merchandise sales will go to support Kirk’s family or various organizations. Some brands even advertised that โ€œ100% of the profits from this shirt will go directly to Turning Point USA,โ€ potentially crossing into legal grey zones under U.S. law.

Questionable Tactics and Responses

It is important to note that Guangzhou Shiwei has a history of exploiting political events for commercial gain. In the past, they have run ads related to both Democratic and Republican candidates during the intensely polarizing 2020 presidential election. By creating multiple social media accounts that tap into themes like faith and patriotism, they skillfully drive their sales.

Efforts to engage with Guangzhou Shiwei for comments on these practices have, however, been unsuccessful.

A Mixed Public Reaction

In the days following Kirk’s death, state media from various countries, including Russia, Iran, and China, have used the event to spark controversies and create division. Meanwhile, it has been observed that companies employing tactics such as โ€œastroturfingโ€ โ€“ essentially creating a fake grassroots movement โ€“ have been doing incredibly well financially, leveraging public sentiment for their profits.

In response to the rampant advertisements, Meta has said that they removed several ads identified as problematic. However, a number of these ads continue to thrive, showcasing Kirk-themed products. On what would have been Kirkโ€™s birthday, posts flooded social media urging supporters to don specific red T-shirts, despite the noticeable absence of endorsement from TPUSA or other significant conservative figures.

Increased Interest for TPUSA

In a striking wave of patriotism following the assassination, Turning Point USA has seen an overwhelming surge in interest. Requests for new campus chapters skyrocketed from around 900 to an astonishing 60,000. All eyes have been on President Donald Trump, who recognized Kirk as a โ€œmartyr for American freedomโ€ during a large memorial service attended by tens of thousands of peopleโ€”one of the largest for a private citizen in recent memory.

As the shock and grief surrounding Charlie Kirk’s assassination continues to unfold, the dynamics of marketing and patriotism remind us of the complexities of the modern world. As these brands rush to capitalize on the sentiment of a nation in mourning, it raises important ethical questions about the commercialization of tragedy.
