Memphis Rides for Change: Join the Movement for a Cyclist-Friendly City

Have you ever found yourself rushing to a Memphis Grizzlies game, only to be stuck in traffic with the clock ticking down to tip-off? Filling up with anxiety as you desperately search for parking, you realize that all those spots are going to cost you around $20 to $35! But while everyone else is inching along in gridlock, have you thought about hopping on a bike instead?

Every Thursday night, the Memphis Social Bicycle Club holds fun and energetic group rides around our beloved midtown and downtown Memphis. With an average of over 50 cyclists participating each week, this friendly gathering is definitely growing more popular! Whether youโ€™re a seasoned cyclist or just joining the two-wheeled community, thereโ€™s a spot for you here.

Creating Connections on Two Wheels

What really stands out about this group is its sense of community. You might meet folks ranging in age from their early 20s to 70s, united by a common love for cycling. Everyone is welcome! All you need is a working bike, a helmet, and some bike lights. Sounds simple, right?

Many Memphians have started to realize just how great Memphis can be as a bike- and pedestrian-friendly city. Between 2010 and 2020, our city made significant strides, adding 270 miles of bike and sidewalk infrastructure, but itโ€™s not enough to just have these amenities โ€“ we need to ensure theyโ€™re maintained and safe to use.

Unfortunately, cyclists in Memphis face some real challenges. From potholes to obstructions like parked cars and even glass in bike lanes, the road can feel pretty treacherous. Not to mention the unpredictable behavior of some drivers, making cyclists feel vulnerable. Despite these hurdles, the passion of the biking community keeps them riding, as itโ€™s their right to share the road alongside cars and trucks!

Join Us for the Memphis Critical Mass

This call to action for a more bike-friendly Memphis invites everyone to join the fun at the upcoming Memphis Critical Mass on Sunday, November 3rd, starting at noon at Wiseacre Downtown HQ. Itโ€™s a day to show the greater Memphis community just how vibrant and passionate our cycling community is. Whether you’re a commuter, a hobbyist, or even a bit of both, this family-friendly event will showcase our love for the city and our desire for safer streets.

Gathering at 12 pm, the group will roll out at 1:00 pm for a leisurely 5-mile ride through downtown Memphis. Following the ride, thereโ€™ll be a celebration back at Wiseacre Downtown HQ where participants can learn more about safe riding, connect with community partners, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow cyclists.

Advocating for Safe Streets

Remember the words shared by club members: โ€œPeople like riding bikes. They donโ€™t like being vulnerable.โ€ Itโ€™s true! The goal is to remove anything that makes riders feel unsafe, encouraging more individuals to hop on a bike and hit the streets.

As Memphians, we can work together to advocate for the changes we want to see โ€“ safer lanes, better infrastructure, and a community where everyone can ride with confidence. If you want to become more involved in promoting biking in Memphis, explore more about the MSBC bike community!

So next time you’re rushing to a basketball game or just looking to enjoy a weekend ride, remember: cycling in Memphis isnโ€™t just a pastime; it’s a movement!
