Major Fire Service Improvement Proposal for Cordova Residents Under Review

Major Fire Service Proposal on the Horizon for Cordova Residents

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Exciting developments are brewing for the residents of unincorporated Cordova, as Shelby County Commissioners are keen on solving the area’s fire service gap with a hefty $1.5 million contract proposal to the City of Memphis. If approved, this could mean that Memphis Fire Crews would be able to spring into action for emergency calls, providing much-needed coverage for local residents.

Why the Need for Faster Response Times?

As many residents have noted, the nearest Shelby County fire stations are situated a considerable distance from Cordova—between seven to twelve miles away. This has raised some concerns about the current response times during emergencies. Cordova resident Miguel Prado summed up the community’s feelings when he said, “That would be very convenient because it would take a lot less time to respond to any event nearby.”

What’s the Solution?

The proposed resolution would facilitate a three-year contract with the City of Memphis, aimed specifically at improving these lagging response times. Shelby County Commissioner Shante Avant explained, “This would make sure that the closest fire station to a home, in the interest obviously of public safety, that they would have those services more immediately.”

However, it’s notable that this collaboration is not a long-term fix. According to Avant, the county currently lacks sufficient funds to construct a new fire station in Cordova. Thus, this contract is seen as a “temporary answer” while they explore options for a more permanent fire service solution in the future. “This is to make a decision on whether or not it’s more prudent and best use of funds to contract with Memphis Shelby County rather than building a new fire station,” she remarked.

Community Involvement is Key!

As the proposal looms, residents are eager to learn more about how this might affect them. A town hall meeting has been set for Tuesday, November 12, at Hope Church, running from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This gathering is expected to be a pivotal moment for concerned citizens looking for answers. Kent Jones, who has lived in the area for seven years, expressed his hope that this meeting will offer clarity on pressing questions. “Like what are they currently doing? What would be the difference? The number of people? How much equipment they would have available to do these types of responses?” he pondered.

The Decision is Almost Here!

All eyes will be on the Shelby County Commissioners as they gear up to make a decision about this proposed resolution on November 18. Community engagement has never been more vital, and local residents are encouraged to take part in discussions to ensure their voices are heard as decisions are made that will impact their safety and well-being.

The proposed contract signifies a potential turning point for the fire services in Cordova, sparking hope and enthusiasm among the residents who have long sought faster emergency response times. With the town hall meeting coming up, it promises to be an event filled with inquiries, insights, and perhaps a little bit of reassurance for all.
