TIPTON COUNTY, Tenn. — A stretch of Highway 179 in Tipton County was shut down for a time Sunday after a crash that left several people hurt, and the road is open again, the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office said later in the day.
The wreck happened on Highway 179 near Burnett Lane. Sheriff Shannon Beasley said his deputies and troopers from the Tennessee Highway Patrol answered the call, and fire and EMS crews were also sent to the scene to care for the injured at the crash site.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation. As of Sunday, officials had not said how many people were taken for treatment, how badly they were hurt or what led to the collision, and no names had been released.
The closure lasted only part of the day before the sheriff announced that both directions of traffic were moving again at Burnett Lane. Authorities asked drivers in the area to stay alert while the investigation continues and to watch for emergency vehicles along the route.
Tipton County is the county directly north of Memphis and Shelby County, and many of its residents make the drive south into the city each day for work, school and shopping. The Millington area, a north suburb of about 10,000 people, sits between Memphis and the Tipton County line, and a closure on a county highway there can push traffic onto other rural roads until crews clear the scene.
More details on the people involved, their injuries and the cause of the crash are expected once the Highway Patrol completes its report.
