Excitement Builds in Memphis for COGIC’s 116th International Holy Convocation

Memphis, Tenn. is getting ready to welcome an exceptional crowd next week as the city prepares for the 116th International Holy Convocation held by the Church of God In Christ (COGIC). With 30,000 people anticipated to flock to downtown, thereโ€™s a buzz of excitement in the air!

A Homecoming for the Conventioneers

Bishop Brandon B. Porter of Greater Community Temple COGIC, a key figure in bringing this significant event back to Memphis after an 11-year hiatus, shares his enthusiasm. โ€œThe Church of God In Christ means so much to the City of Memphis, and I believe Memphis knows that,โ€ he noted passionately. The competition between Memphis and St. Louis, Missouri, to host the event has been fierce, but Bishop Porter is determined to showcase all that Memphis has to offer.

With a convention that lasts nearly 12 days, Bishop Porter points out the immense economic impact it brings to the city. โ€œThey spend money, they eat food, they get transportation,โ€ he explained, emphasizing the incredible $30 to $40 million boost to the local economy. This influx helps not just the businesses but also enriches the cityโ€™s culture and spirit, making it beneficial for everyone involved.

Working Together for a Smooth Experience

As the convention draws near, Bishop Porter and local leaders have been actively reaching out to nearby hotels. Their goal? To lower room prices for members attending the event. Additionally, they are exploring options for transportation into downtownโ€”especially important for senior attendees. Itโ€™s going to be a bustling time in downtown Memphis, yet some challenges are on the horizon.

This year, as debacle has struck the Sheraton Hotel, with around 200 rooms unavailable due to poor conditions. Furthermore, attendees will not have access to trolleys or shuttle buses this year, which adds an extra layer of complexity.

Despite these challenges, excitement continues to grow. The General Manager of the Renasant Convention Center, Dean Dennis, predicts around 12,000 people will be bustling inside the center on the convocationโ€™s busiest day. Many visitors will also be spreading their wings and staying in hotels throughout the city, showcasing the event’s scope.

Challenges with Transportation

The transportation aspect of the event has raised some eyebrows. Erik Stevenson, Chief Administrative Officer of the Memphis Area Transit Authority, stated that they are currently lacking a full fleet of buses. โ€œTherefore, operating a shuttle for any organization would be an exceptional service that we are unable to accommodate at this time,โ€ he said, shedding light on the logistical hurdles they are facing.

A Delicious Coincidence

On a lighter note, the excitement doesnโ€™t stop there! The Downtown Dining Week coincides with the convocation, offering a wonderful opportunity for attendees to experience Memphis’s culinary delights. Chandell Ryan, President and CEO of the Downtown Memphis Commission, shared her enthusiasm: โ€œThere will be lots of specials for them to enjoy. The foot traffic alone will be awesome for our downtown area. Weโ€™re just so happy to have them back.โ€

These delectable offerings are sure to delight many at the convention, providing a vibrant way to enjoy local flavors while theyโ€™re in town.

Safety First!

To ensure a secure experience for everyone, Memphis Police officials have announced additional patrols around the convention center during this buzzing week. Itโ€™s an extra measure of comfort for both locals and visitors attending the event.

This year’s Holy Convocation will take place from November 5-10, with the general assembly scheduled for November 11 and 12. It promises to be a week filled with unity, spirituality, and joyous celebration.

As Memphis braces for the influx of devout participants, the community is ready to showcase its unparalleled hospitality and vibrant culture. It’s more than just a convention; it’s a heartfelt reunion that reinforces the ties between faith, community, and the city.
