Memphis Paint Festival Set to Return with Theme of Art as Healing on October 12, 2024

Colorful Mural Celebration

Memphis Gets Ready for a Colorful Comeback with Paint Memphis Festival

Have you wandered around Memphis and stumbled upon a stunning mural, wondering aloud who created it? Well, you’re not alone! The magic of these vibrant artworks can be largely credited to Paint Memphis, an annual festival that transforms our city into a kaleidoscope of colors and creativity. After a brief hiatus, the festival is back and more exciting than ever, returning to its roots at the intersection of Lamar and Willett, the original site where it all began back in 2017.

This Year’s Theme: Art is Healing

This year, the festival embraces a heartfelt theme: “Art is Healing.” In a world that has seen so much division, especially during the pandemic, this theme rings true now more than ever. According to Karen Golightly, the festival’s executive director, โ€œArt is healing, and weโ€™re so excited to bring our festival back to this space where three communitiesโ€”Glenview, Rozelle-Annesdale, and Central Gardensโ€”meet. Weโ€™re here to show how art can bridge people together.โ€

A Fun-Filled Day Awaits

Mark your calendars for October 12, 2024 because Paint Memphis is packed with exciting activities for everyone to enjoy:

  • Mural Workshop: From 1-3 PM, join Memphis favorite Jamond Bullock for a free hands-on mural workshop at 829 S. Willett. Ever wanted to try your hand at mural painting? Nowโ€™s your chance!
  • Live Music & Performances: Get ready to groove! Enjoy the live sounds of The Turnstyles, Marcella Simien on the Overton Park Shell on Wheels stage, and catch the electrifying Memphis Jookinโ€™ led by Ryan Haskett.
  • Vendors & Food Trucks: Satisfy your taste buds with some of Memphisโ€™ best food trucks and artisan vendors selling locally made goods.
  • Kidsโ€™ Area: The kiddos can unleash their creativity in a special art area designed just for them!
  • Tag Battle: For those feeling competitive, donโ€™t miss the graffiti tag battle at 1570 Lamar Avenue at 5 PM. Artists will compete for some great prizes!

Bringing Color to the Community

What makes Paint Memphis truly special is its ability to brighten up our neighborhoods. This year’s murals will span over buildings, underpasses, and even the Altown Skate Park. Artists like Milt Coronado, Carlos Valverde, Taylord, and several others will leave their marks, enhancing the cityโ€™s visual appeal. Local artist Joseph Boyd will spearhead a collaborative mural named โ€œPieces of Peace,โ€ where students from Memphis and Shelby County will contribute to a piece that symbolizes unity.

From Chelsea Avenue to Broad Avenue, Paint Memphis has become a phenomenon that has turned ordinary walls into extraordinary community landmarks. And guess what? The impact of the festival doesnโ€™t fade after the last brushstroke. With year-round workshops and community mural projects, Paint Memphis ensures that anyone with a passion for art can get involved.
