Conservation Director, Scott Banbury, is particularly concerned about the immense power demand. โThis will likely require additional generating capacity which can lead to more air pollution,โ he explained. Not exactly the news anyone wants to hear, especially when weโre all trying to be more environmentally conscious.
Powering Down When Needed
On the flip side, itโs worth noting that just like Teslaโs supercomputer being built nearby, Merkle Standard has to comply with MLGWโs Demand Response Program. This means they have agreed to scale back their operations when the power grid is under stressโlike during extreme weather. McGowen reassured the public, stating, โMLGW customers will always be the first priority.โ
Comparisons with High-Profile Tech Projects
Speaking of nearby tech developments, xAI, another major player in the tech domain, is currently taking 50 MW of power from MLGW but has requested 150 MW. That said, they are still in talks with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to solidify their energy needs. They might even need to build their own substation to make this all work.
