Memphis Braces for Storms as Tropical Weather Hits

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It seems the weather has taken quite a turn lately. Just yesterday, folks around the Memphis area were greeted with a mix of weather forecasts that hinted at a possibility of a rainy day ahead. Temperatures soared to a high of 83 degrees with a light breeze coming from the east-southeast at around 5 to 10 miles per hour. However, as the sun set, ominous clouds rolled in, creating an air of anticipation.

As many of you might have experienced, yesterday was not just about warm weather. As evening approached, it became clear that remnants of tropical storm Francine, which had downgraded after making landfall in Louisiana, were making their way into the Mid-South region. By Thursday morning, everyone was on high alert as heavy rains and strong winds began to settle in, disrupting the usual morning commute.

Traffic Trouble on the Roads

The storms certainly made their presence felt, particularly on the roads. Drivers faced significant delays as multiple accidents caused major traffic snarls across the interstate system. A series of unfortunate events began in the early hours, with numerous reports of crashes that had everyone feeling frustrated and anxious.

At 4:14 p.m., for instance, a crash blocked the left lane of I-40 East at I-55, causing traffic to back up for about two exits. Experts warned that these delays could stretch for up to five minutes, which may not sound too dramatic, but when youโ€™re in a car, even those extra minutes can feel like an eternity!

Other incidents included a significant crash on Hawkins Mill Road at Longmont Drive, where downed power lines complicated the recovery efforts. Traffic also came to a standstill on Highway 196 at I-40 due to storm damage that arose later in the afternoon. Unfortunately, this was just the tip of the iceberg as we saw multiple crashes that kept the police and emergency responders busy throughout the morning.

A Rainy Evening Ahead

As the day rolled on, the weather dictated everyone’s plans. Many locals braced themselves for a night filled with rain, hoping their homes would remain dry and safe. For some, the thought of reading a good book, sipping hot chocolate, or watching a movie was appealing, but whatever your preferred way to cozy up, you were likely to be spending some time indoors.

Safety First

Amidst all of this, it’s a good reminder for everyone to stay alert while driving in adverse weather conditions. Flood watches in effect for Friday made safety even more critical. Residents are urged to stay updated with the latest weather alerts and be prepared for possible power outages stemming from downed trees or linesโ€”a reality many faced following the earlier spur of severe storms.

While this weather is causing quite a stir now, thereโ€™s light at the end of the tunnel. Reports suggest the weekend will clear up beautifully, offering fantastic opportunities to enjoy local events and activities. From cultural festivities to quiet nights in with loved ones, the Mid-South has plenty to offer once the storms have passed.

So, hang in there, Memphis! Weโ€™re all in this together, and before you know it, those warm and sunny days will be right around the corner.
