TN State Rep. Dwayne Thompson Announces Retirement, Won’t Seek Re-election

Retiring Politician Leaving State House

TN State Rep. Dwayne Thompson Not Running for Re-election

Thompson Announces His Retirement from Politics

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Democratic State Representative Dwayne Thompson, a four-term legislator, has declared that he will not run in the forthcoming election. Thompson was first elected in 2016 to serve in District 96, ousting then-incumbent Republican Steve McManus, who had been in office for a decade. This election result was viewed by many as a surprise.

During his eight years in office, Thompson endorsed numerous bills that aided in streamlining government efficiency. He prominently championed the cause for better access to mental health care and affordable housing. Moreover, Thompson played a pivotal role in advocating for Medicaid expansion.

Prior to his political career, Thompson was a human resources officer, and he believes now it’s time to retire, allowing a new Democrat to take the reins.

“A Privilege to Serve”

โ€œHaving the trust of my community to represent them in the Tennessee State House has been an enormous honor”, stated Thompson. He continued, โ€œI believe itโ€™s time now for me to focus more on my family and other stuff, and let another person carry on the battles in Nashville.โ€

Significant Contributions

Throughout his tenure, Thompson has been integral in pushing for a more efficient legislative process and greater access to services for constituents. His tireless advocating for mental health services and affordable housing have earned him both respect and admiration from his peers and constituents alike. Thompson’s steadfast dedication to the fight for Medicaid expansion also speaks volumes about his commitment to the well-being of those he represented.

While he is stepping away from politics, Thompsonโ€™s work in the Tennessee State House will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy, particularly in District 96.

Future of District 96 Post Thompson

Thompson’s decision not to run again opens up an opportunity for another Democrat to fill the seat. However, it remains to be seen who will take up the torch and continue to fight for the issues that Thompson prioritized, such as access to mental health care, affordable housing, and Medicaid expansion.

The next election will undoubtedly be crucial for the residents of District 96, as they will determine who will represent their interests in the state House in the years to come.
