MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis officers say gunfire tore through a Whitehaven park Thursday evening, leaving one person dead and two others fighting for their lives.
Units raced toward Whitehaven Lane near Auburn Road at David Carnes Park shortly before 7 p.m. One log put arrival closer to 6:47 p.m. along the 900 block of Whitehaven Lane.
On scene, police found three people hit by gunfire. One was pronounced dead in the park. The other two went to a hospital in critical shape, per the first briefings.
Detectives have not named the victims, sketched a motive, or said whether the shooting grew from an argument, a robbery, or another clash. Opening releases carried no suspect description.
The Memphis Police Department asked tipsters to dial CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH. Investigators kept working the park and nearby blocks overnight for casings, video and witnesses.
David Carnes Park sits in southwest Memphis near the Mississippi line, a neighborhood green that usually draws families rather than crime-scene tape. Whitehaven Lane is a main cut-through on that side of the city.
Until names and charging papers surface, the public file is limited to the body count, the critical injuries, and the tip line. Police urged residents who heard shots or saw a fleeing car to come forward quickly.
Whitehaven neighbors told officers they heard several rounds before emergency lights packed the park entrance. Detectives were still sorting victim identities from witness accounts in the first overnight updates, and no weapon had been publicly recovered.
