NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee drivers are paying noticeably less at the pump heading into Election Day, with the statewide average for regular gasoline sliding about 10 cents over the past week.
AAA’s daily survey put Tennessee’s regular unleaded average at $3.71 a gallon on Monday, down from $3.81 a week earlier and $3.96 a month ago. That is still well above the $2.63 drivers paid a year ago. Diesel averaged $5.92, a little below last week, and premium sat at $4.56.
Prices vary widely by region. Among the metro areas AAA tracks, the Tennessee side of the Memphis market was the most expensive at $3.87, while the Tennessee portion of the Chattanooga area was cheapest at $3.51. The Tennessee side of Clarksville-Hopkinsville averaged $3.52, and Knoxville and Nashville both stood near $3.70.
GasBuddy’s station-by-station price reports show a similar trend, with the Tennessee average at $3.67, down 11.7 cents in a week. GasBuddy found the cheapest gallon in the state on Sunday at $2.69 and the most expensive at $5.29. The national average in its data was $4.12, down 17.1 cents from the prior week. In Knoxville, GasBuddy’s figure was $3.66, a drop of 12.8 cents from $3.78.
GasBuddy’s petroleum analysis chief, Patrick De Haan, said prices fell in almost every state as refinery maintenance winds down and demand eases with cooler weather. He noted oil slipped nearly $2 in Sunday trading, with West Texas Intermediate at $102.15 a barrel, but warned that prices could swing again after the election depending on events around the Strait of Hormuz and Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries.
