Whitehaven High Reopens Monday After Power Outage in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Students at Whitehaven High School head back to class Monday after a power failure kept the south Memphis campus closed for two days late last week.

Memphis-Shelby County Schools shut the school on Thursday and again on Friday while crews worked on the electrical problem. The district said the outage knocked out critical systems across the campus, making it impossible to hold classes safely.

On Sunday the district announced that power had been restored and that Whitehaven would return to its normal schedule. Before the doors reopen, district facilities, security and technology staff went through the building’s systems to confirm the campus was ready for students and employees.

District teams are staying on call in case new problems surface this week. The school thanked families and staff for their patience during the closure and said it looked forward to welcoming students back to campus on Monday morning.

The two lost days come in the middle of the fall term, and families with questions about missed assignments or makeup work should check with their teachers and the school office. Whitehaven High serves the neighborhood of the same name in the southern part of Memphis, a former independent town that Memphis annexed in 1969.

The neighborhood stretches from Brooks Road and Interstate 55 on the north down to the Shelby County line on the south, with Winchester Road marking its eastern edge. It is best known as the home of Graceland, the Elvis Presley estate that anchors much of the city’s music tourism.
