MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fans planning to show up to Friday night high school football in Memphis dressed for Halloween will have to change first. Memphis-Shelby County Schools says costumes and masks are banned at every district game on Friday, Oct. 30.

The district put out the rule Thursday, a day before a full slate of games lands on the eve of Halloween. Costumes, masks and any face covering that is part of a costume are all on the list. Stadium staff will refuse entry to anyone who arrives wearing them.

MSCS framed the step as a way to keep students, staff and spectators safe and to keep game nights orderly. The district also reminded families that its standing clear bag policy still applies at the gate, and it asked people to read over the safety rules before they head out so lines at the entrance keep moving.

The costume rule ties into the district’s PEACE² campaign, its conflict resolution push for school events. The campaign asks fans to show good sportsmanship, walk away from confrontations and help keep the stands free of fights. MSCS points families to its website for more on the campaign.

The order covers only MSCS football games on Friday night, and the district’s usual stadium rules, including the clear bag requirement, stay in force alongside the costume ban for the whole night.

With kickoffs scheduled at campuses around Memphis on the night before Halloween, district officials asked families to review the guidelines before arriving at stadiums. Doing that ahead of time, the district said, should help avoid trouble and delays at the entry gates once crowds start to build Friday evening.
