# Deadly Crash Shuts Lamar Avenue at American Way in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A two-vehicle collision at Lamar Avenue and American Way in Memphis left one person dead Wednesday evening and closed part of Lamar Avenue while police investigated.

Memphis Police Department officers were called to the intersection a little before 6 p.m. The person who died was declared dead where the crash happened. Police have not said who was driving either vehicle, how many people were inside them or whether anyone else was hurt, and no cause had been given.

Investigators closed Lamar Avenue in both directions from American Way down to Knight Arnold Road while they worked the scene. The department said the lanes would stay shut until further notice and told drivers to pick another way around the closure.

The Memphis Police Department is leading the investigation. As of Wednesday night, the department had not released the name of the person who was killed, the ages of anyone involved or any information about possible charges, and it had not said when the road would reopen.

Drivers who use Lamar during the morning commute should check whether the lanes have reopened before heading out, and allow extra time on nearby routes if the closure is still in place. Knight Arnold Road marks the south end of the closed section and American Way, where the vehicles collided, marks the north end.
