MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One of the biggest employers in Memphis is hiring its next finance chief from another. FedEx said Monday that Jamere Jackson, who has run the books at AutoZone since 2021, will become its executive vice president and chief financial officer on Nov. 30.

Jackson takes over from Claude Russ, who has filled the CFO role on an interim basis since June. The move gives FedEx a permanent finance leader heading into the holiday shipping season.

FedEx Corporation, AutoZone, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital anchor the Memphis economy, so the hire keeps a seasoned local executive inside the city’s corporate core while shifting him from auto parts retail to global shipping.

FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam welcomed Jackson to the executive team and credited him with a record of pairing growth investments with a steady focus on profit, cash flow and capital allocation. Jackson said he was eager to learn the business and work with the company’s finance staff on its plan for profitable growth.

The connection to the city runs deep on both sides. Memphis International Airport is the world’s busiest cargo airport by tonnage, and both FedEx and AutoZone are based in the city. Jackson’s move means one Memphis corporate headquarters is lending its top numbers expert to another rather than the job going to an outside recruit.

For FedEx, the CFO post carries weight as the company works through a period its chief executive described as strong momentum, with leadership pushing to turn that into profitable growth and long-term value for stockholders. For AutoZone, the departure opens a search for a new finance chief.
