MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A pump maker that traces its roots to 1848 is opening its first Tennessee operation in Memphis. ITT Goulds Pumps plans to spend $31 million on a manufacturing and distribution center and hire 57 workers, state and local leaders announced Monday.
The company will move into a building at 5633 Mineral Wells Road. Right now it runs a distribution center just across the state line in Southaven, Mississippi, and it has run out of room there. The bigger Memphis site is meant to give it space to keep more inventory on hand and keep up with growing orders.
Goulds Pumps is based in Seneca Falls, New York, where it became the first company in the world to make iron pumps. It now builds pumps used in energy, mining, power plants, chemical work, paper mills, water and wastewater systems and other industries. It belongs to the Flow Technologies segment of ITT Inc., a Stamford, Connecticut, company with more than 11,000 employees worldwide.
The project was announced by Gov. Bill Lee and Stuart McWhorter, the state economic and community development commissioner. In the state release, Memphis Mayor Paul Young called the investment a sign of confidence in the city, and Shelby County Mayor Mickell Lowery said the company had other options and picked Shelby County anyway. McWhorter pointed to the area’s access to rail, interstates, air cargo and the river as a reason the site works.
The Greater Memphis Chamber, EDGE, Memphis Light, Gas and Water and TVA also worked on the deal. The company has not said when hiring will start.
