MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police say a man has been charged with murder after a Friday night shooting in the Parkway Village neighborhood left one person dead near Getwell Road.

Officers were called to a shooting along Getwell Road around 8:40 p.m. Friday. When they arrived, they found a man who had been shot and was in critical condition. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment and later died from the gunshot injuries.

A second local account said Memphis Police responded to a shooting call off Getwell Road near American Way just before 8:45 p.m. Officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound who was transported in critical condition and later died at the hospital.

During the investigation, police said the detained man admitted to shooting the victim. He was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, according to the department updates released Saturday.

Police said the Parkway Village homicide is now an active investigation. Detectives are expected to continue canvassing the Getwell Road corridor near American Way as they seek witnesses and any surveillance that can clarify how the Friday night confrontation unfolded.

Neighborhood safety around Parkway Village has been a standing concern for residents who travel Getwell Road for shopping and work. City leaders under Mayor Paul Young and Shelby County partners routinely track violent crime that hits east Memphis corridors and shapes weekend public-safety staffing.

No motive has been released publicly, and police have not announced additional arrests tied to the Friday night shooting. Anyone with information is typically asked to contact Memphis police investigators handling the Parkway Village case.

As the investigation continues, drivers and residents near Getwell Road should expect a visible police presence while detectives work the second-degree murder case that followed the critical shooting and hospital death reported Friday night.
